Carolina Hurricanes
The National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes celebrated their 10th Anniversary in North Carolina during the 2007-2008 season. The Hurricanes relocated to North Carolina in 1997, and played their first two seasons in the Greensboro Coliseum. The team opened its current home, the RBC Center (formerly Entertainment and Sports Arena), in Raleigh on October 29, 1999 vs. New Jersey Devils.
In the ten years since the RBC Center opened, Carolina has played host to the Stanley Cup Finals twice, in 2002 and 2006, and hosted the National Hockey League Entry Draft in 2004, drawing international attention to Raleigh. On June 19, 2006, the Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 3-1, in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to bring the state of North Carolina its first major professional sports championship.
